Why you shouldn't wait until fall for your family photography session

There is just something about fall in the PNW. It’s that magical time of year that is leading up to the holidays. The air is crisp and we finally get to swap out our birks for boots. I love a fall session and it’s my busiest time of year, but there are 3 other amazing seasons that might just be a better option for your family photos. Here’s why you might consider booking your session for Winter, Spring, or Summer.

June session at Discovery Park

Photographers are busy

Most established photographers start booking fall shoots in early summer or even at the beginning of the year. Our schedules can book up fast, especially during our busy seasons. You certainly don’t want to wait until fall to book your fall shoot.

You are busy

If you are anything like our family, with kids in sports and activities, things pretty much kick off the first day of school and keep you busy throughout the school year. Fall is an extremely busy time in our house between gymnastics and hockey practices. I have even been known to set up a spreadsheet to divide up the carpooling between my husband and myself.

Christmas cards don’t have to be fall or Christmas-themed

your friends and family will love to see an image of your family surrounded by cherry blossoms or wildflowers just as much as that coveted fall foliage we all love.

August Session in Enumclaw

The PNW is beautiful year-round

This is why we live here right? The seasons are distinct yet not too extreme. I love shooting year-round in the PNW and you can read more about that here!

Your children won’t grow that much between May and October

Unless you have a newborn, your kids are going to look pretty much the same whether you do a spring session or a fall one.

You can always book a holiday mini for that other photo

mini sessions aren’t going anywhere and you can’t swing a cat without hitting a startup photographer offering mini sessions around the holidays. if all you want is one smiling posed photo of your family in cute matching outfits, the mini session is the way to go

Family sessions should be about more than just your Christmas card

This is the big one. Family sessions are about so much more than ticking the box and checking the task off the list. They are an opportunity to connect with your family and capture a time in your children’s lives that deserves to be documented. By choosing a less busy season, you can allow your session to be a joyful experience worth capturing.
